Living with ADHD and autism can present unique challenges, especially when these conditions are diagnosed later in life. As someone who recently turned 40 and received these diagnoses, I have been navigating this new chapter with a mix of emotions – relief, confusion, and a thirst for understanding.

One of the silver linings of this new journey has been the opportunity to discover new hobbies and skills that align with my strengths and interests. While it may seem daunting to embark on new ventures later in life, the process of exploring different activities has been both liberating and empowering. For individuals like myself, who have ADHD and autism, finding hobbies that provide a sense of fulfilment and joy is crucial. These activities can serve as a form of therapy, helping to calm the mind and cultivate a sense of achievement. In my case, I have found solace in activities like reading, knitting and crocheting, which allow me to express myself creatively and find a sense of peace amidst the chaos of everyday life.

Moreover, delving into new skills has been a rewarding experience that has challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace growth. From learning a new language (I started to learn Irish Gaelic on Duolingo) to learning to sew and quilt, each skill acquired has opened up new possibilities and expanded my horizons in ways I never thought possible. If you find yourself in a similar position of navigating life with ADHD and autism, I encourage you to embrace the journey of discovering new hobbies and skills. Whether it is picking up a musical instrument (I’m learning guitar) trying your hand at photography, or exploring the world of woodworking (on my to do list), there is a vast array of activities waiting to be explored. By immersing yourself in activities that bring you joy and fulfilment, you can not only enhance your quality of life but also connect with others on a similar journey. I had so much fun when I did my first quilting class. I was terrified to start as groups of people scare me but I had so much fun! Remember, it is never too late to start something new and embark on a path of self-discovery and growth.

In conclusion, the road to self-discovery after an ADHD and autism diagnosis may be complex, but it is also filled with endless possibilities. Embrace the journey, explore new hobbies, and learn new skills – you never know what amazing opportunities lie ahead. And if you are still a little apprehensive, come along with me and watch all fun and silly things that happen along the way.

Thank you for reading my friends.
